Extra protection against UV radiation

Everyone knows that it is important to protect the skin well against the influence of the sun, in order to counteract the effects of oxidative damage by UV radiation. That is why we cover the skin against direct sunlight and / or apply a high factor of sun cream before going out in the sun. Few people know that certain specific nutrients can actually be used by the body to help protect the skin from oxidative damage from UV rays. Yet that is a well-documented scientific principle.

Oxidative damage from UV rays

When we help our body to protect itself sufficiently against oxidative damage by air pollution and UV radiation, we also contribute to the capture of free radicals in body cells. The body's own enzymes (Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMPs)) are then left “off”, which helps keeping intact the balance between the breakdown and renewal.

Natural protection for collagen

Research has shown that specific "skin vitamins" such as vitamin C, biotin and niacin support the skin from the inside. Vitamin C contributes to the formation of collagen, which is important for the structure of the skin, the subcutaneous connective tissue and the blood vessels in the skin. Vitamin C helps protect skin cells against oxidative damage from air pollution and UV radiation. Vitamin C is also beneficial for elastic veins and supports the maintenance of a strong vessel wall and is therefore important for a good condition of the blood vessels. Biotin and Niacin contribute to the maintenance of normal skin and mucous membranes. They nourish the skin from the inside and support the regenerative capacity of the skin.

Oxidative damage from UV rays

Exposure to UV light and air pollution increase the number of circulating free radicals in the body. An antioxidant (Vitamin C), which is able to neutralize the free radicals, contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative damage. When we help our body to protect itself sufficiently against oxidative damage from air pollution and UV radiation, we also contribute to the capture of free radicals in body cells. Body's own enzymes (Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMPs), then remain “off”, which helps keep intact between degradation and renewal.
